About You

Stephanie Schlitz: I’m a linguistics and English professor at Bloomsburg. Teaching DH is exceptionally interesting to me because it reflects the interdisciplinary approach adopted within my own research, which includes historical linguistics, manuscript editing, text editing, electronic publishing, and language and technology. Over the past three years I’ve been immersed in the DH community, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce the field to you and to emphasize the how and why of its critical importance to your own studies.

Grace Barry- I feel as though I haven’t done anything very exciting in my life, but I am aiming to change that in the coming years. My past experiences include participating in Girl Scouts for over ten years, playing oboe in concert band for eight years and saxophone in marching band for six years, skiing with my school’s ski and snowboard club, participating in National Junior Honor Society in middle school (though I was kicked out for missing meetings—I have a terrible memory!), and being accepted into National Honor Society despite my prior transgressions. I would love to travel abroad in college to expand my horizons and see landscapes and cultures that are much different than ours. Currently, I have only been to Canada and Bermuda, neither of which are different enough for me (though the scenery in Bermuda was much nicer than that of my hometown, York, PA). I am very scared by this daunting course, but I am also very excited to learn about the different facets of digital humanities.

Amanda Machey – I’m on the 6 year plan here at BU. I started in the Fall of 2006 and am trying to triple major with Secondary Education, Math and Spanish (and finish with Honors!). If the Spanish doesn’t work out, it will become a minor. I’m very excited to teach and I’d prefer at the high school level because I believe I could have more of an impact there. I enjoy learning in general – and have a passion for it, that’s why I’d like to be an educator someday. Some of my favorite courses that I’ve taken – Fundamentals of Musicianship, Contemporary Philosophy of the Mind, Honors Composition II and Coding & Signal Processing. Bring on DH!

Sarah Gorr- I am the oldest of 5 children. My sisters, who are 10 years younger than me, inspire me everyday. They made me realize my love for children. I have a strong passion for teaching. Children intrigue me. I absolutely love them. This summer I worked as a camp counselor at my local YMCA. I worked with 6 year old girls all day everyday. I absolutely loved it! It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I cannot wait until I become an educator and work with these children everyday.
My love for children is only one part of me. I also love music. I have played piano since third grade and have played flute since sixth grade. All thorough high school music was my passion. I was involved in band, chorus, choral ensemble, and select chorus. I was also involved in the plays my school put on every fall. Music lifts my spirits if I am having a bad day. Music and teaching are my two passions in life. I am very excited to learn how they are incorporated into DH!

Julia Fox – I am a freshman mass communications major. I chose my major because I find not only the creative aspects of creating a movie or television show interesting, but also the technical innovations and history of the media. I want to have a career in the entertainment industry one day. However, what I would like to do is still unclear! In high school, I used my love of writing to be a reporter for the school newspaper. I was also a member of Delco Hi-Q (an academic quiz competition), National Honor Society, and Stage Crew for the school musical. One of my biggest dreams is to travel the world. I have already seen England, France, Belgium and Amsterdam, but I want to see each country again, as well as many others! Though I know I will miss my home city of Philadelphia while I am traveling (How could I not? It’s always sunny there!), I cannot wait to see all of the fascinating adventures that the world and my life have in store for me.

Ken Myers- I am a senior Chemistry major. My home is in Enola, PA and I went to Cumberland Valley High School. While I was in high school I played football for 4 years. I love to ride my ATV, play sports and hang out with friends. Currently I am the president of chemistry club here at Bloomsburg university, and a lab prep student for Biochemistry. This past summer I participated in my third summer of research. I also took my MCATs this summer and recieved a fellowship for graduate school. My decision has become very difficult. I did not walk into chemistry thinking that graduate school was where I would end up. I always saw myself as a doctor. No I don’t know what to think. I enjoy both fields and have a possible future in both. Hope we all have a good semester in DH. If there is anything else you want to know about me you can always email me.

Katrina Merz – I’m an freshman from Schuylkill Haven, PA. I lived their my entire life and grew up with the same people. Out of my class of 100, 10 of us came to Bloomsburg. I’m an English major with a minor in professional writing. I want to get involved with book publishing and write novels on the side. I used to play soccer, softball, and basketball, even though I’m not a very athletic person. I was a member of the Drama club in high school and a member of the National Honor Society. I chose to come to Bloomsburg because of the Honors program and because of the scholarship that I received. DH is very interesting to me at this point and I think I will really like this class.

Natalie Greenholt- I’m a freshman majoring in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. I’m from Hanover, PA (Snack food capital…Snyder’s Pretzels and Utz Potato chips are made in my hometown!!!) I played tennis, basketball, and ran track in high school. I love tennis and am playing for Bloomsburg! In high school, I was the class historian and the editor of Key Club. I hope to become involved in campus life at Bloomsburg, and I’m really excited to begin a new chapter of my life!

  8. earcuri says:

Emily Arcuri– I am a sophomore English/Creative Writing major with a minor in Professional Writing. I love Bloomsburg University and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. I was actually accepted as an Elementary Ed. major, but a few months before I moved in, I realized what I really wanted to do was write. I have always loved to write, but teaching always seemed more practical. Luckily for me, I decided to go for my passion and Bloomsburg just happened to have a great English program and a new professional writing minor the year I started. I am so thankful Bloomsburg had the right English program for me because I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. My dream is to be able to write for a living. Like I said in class, I’ve been playing the trumpet for about ten years and playing in the marching band and concert band are hobbies for me. I love to have fun, and I love simple things in life, like sunshine, dogs, music, books, children, shopping, and laughing. I’m excited to learn more about Digital Humanities, since it seems interesting and very valuable!

Erik Kile: Hello friends and welcome to my little town! I was born across the street in the Bloomsburg Hospital and have lived in or around Bloom ever since. I’m a sophomore double-majoring in Creative Writing and Art Studio. While I love to learn new things and expand my mind, I’ve always made a conscious effort to hang on to my child-like imagination (and boyish charm), which I intend to utilize in writing/illustrating children’s books. Poetry and short stories are also among my interests as a writer. My family is strewn about – as far west as Minnesota and across the Atlantic to Norway – which is fantastic, because I love to travel and get what most would call “lost” along the way. I also love music (both listening and playing) and although I’m primarily a percussionist, I enjoy learning to play whatever instrument I can get my hands on. On the rare occasion that I’m in front of a television, I’m either watching Seinfeld, Discovery, or the Food Network. If you care to know more about me, take a stroll downtown, where I’m usually studying to mariachi music in Ready-Go Burrito.

Derek Weicht- I’m a sophomore enviromental science major with a minor in biology. I was originally born in Texas but move to Hanover, PA when I was 6. I played soccer and played trombone in the band in high school. I play soccer for the men’s club soccer team at Bloomsburg. I got into one of my biggest hobbies of rock climbing last year and I climb as much as I can. I also enjoy water-skiing and jet-skiing but sadly I can’t do those during the school year. I work as a lifeguard at Codorus State Park but that is only a summer job. I chose Bloomsburg because of the promptness of the admissions office and the oppurtunities I was offered. I am so happy I did choose Bloomsburg and I plan on graduating from here.

  11. jkov says:

Jordyn Koveleski- I am a freshman speech-pathology and audiology major and spanish minor. I was born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey and moved to Lancaster, PA when I was 11. We moved on my 11th birthday, actually. I love sports, basketball and tennis especially. My favorite tennis player is Rafael Nadal- not just because he is a good-looking guy and is ranked the number 1 tennis player in the world, but because he is a lefty like me and he never gives up or shows frustration on the court. He is very classy. My major pet peeve is lateness. I still have one baby tooth, an adult tooth just never grew in. I love being active and trying new kinds of sports, like recently I learned how to play ladder golf and I love it. I picked Bloomsburg because when I stepped on campus I just felt like I could fit in here, and they have the best program in the state for speech path. I am excited to spend the next 6 years of my life here. I love college life.

  12. jshilp says:

John Shilpetski | I am a junior English major. If you talk to me, I will seem grumpy. I apologize. I’m just shy. I use a crotchety exterior to keep people away. Otherwise, I’m really quite jovial. Ask Erik. Literature, linguistics and creative writing are my passions in life. (Notice the lack of the Oxford Comma. I hate that thing, but I’d hate even more to get all prescriptivist on you.) A fairly recent interest of mine is the death of print culture (that is, magazines, books and paper in general.) This class, at least tangentially, plays into that. Personally, I love paper for all sorts of reasons (metaphysical, olfactory and tactile) and I would hate to see it die. Apparently, I also love parentheses. Cooking and baking are also quite important to me, so much so that I’m trying to write a cooking textbook. I want to call it a cookbook and rename all those glossy, garish tomes “recipe books,” but I don’t think it’ll stick. I listen almost exclusively to German dance-metal. I want to write comic books and direct films and teach literature at the university level. I want to live in the mountains with an English sheep dog. I want to die on another planet.

Hello :) My name is Ali Huber and I’m a freshman. I currently have an undeclared major but I am interested in history and business. I have a large family including my two sisters, one of which is my twin. Yes, we are identical. And no, she doesn’t go here. I live in Luzerne and grew up in Mechanicsburg, PA. I enjoy running, I was on my high school’s track and cross country teams all four years and I continue to run now so if anyone needs a running buddy I’m up for it! I have a dog at home named Molly, she is a small cocker spaniel. My favorite color is aqua…in fact i just painted my toes that exact color…anyway I really like it here at Bloom and I’m excited to see what will come in the next few years, it shall be fun :)
